D.C. At-Large Councilmember Kwame R. Brown demands from the DC Public School officials a detailed briefing on the incident that occurred yesterday at Marion P. Shadd Elementary School where 4th grade teacher Aisha Randall was electrically shocked by exposed wires in the school’s multipurpose room.
Ms. Randall, 2004 recipient of the Ward 7 Educational Council Teacher of the Year award, was meeting with other faculty members when she brushed against wires exposed near the baseboards approximately three feet from the floor. The incident occurred just days after the elementary school located on East Capitol Street, S.E. had undergone inspection. Randall experienced injuries and collapsed as she being was escorted to Providence Hospital for treatment.
Councilmember Brown is seeking answers regarding the procedures of the DCPS facilities management operations in notifying faculty of precautions that must be followed while inspections are conducted and safeguards identified as a result of findings. “I am deeply concerned with our school systems method of conducting inspections,” stated Brown. “We shouldn’t wait until an accident occurs to make known or correct obvious safety hazards in need of emergency repair. This incident could have easily involved a child where injuries could have been even more severe. While we evaluate the conditions of our crumbling schools, we cannot allow our parents teachers, children to either work, learn or play in harm’s way.”
