On Sunday April 10, D.C. At-Large Councilmember Kwame R. Brown will discuss the impact of domestic violence in the District at the National Crime Victims’ Rights Week ceremony to be held at the Lincoln Theater.
Earlier this week, Brown introduced emergency legislation to provide funding for non-profit providers of emergency shelter to victims of domestic violence. The bill entitled, “Victims of Domestic Violence Fund Establishment Emergency Act,” creates a special fund comprised of federal funds to be specifically directed for this cause.
“Domestic Violence is a public health issue as serious as cancer, a crime issue as widespread as drug dealing,” stated Brown. ‘We must provide victims of domestic violence safe havens of immediate refuge to secure them from danger and protect our communities against this plague by educating each other in public forums.”
Each year the Office of Victims of Crime, the Office of Justice Programs of the United States Department of Justice help lead communities across the country in their observances of National Crime Victims’ Rights Weeks. This year’s ceremony marks the 25th observance of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week in which the Office of Community Affairs in the Executive Office of the Mayor, The Office of Victim Services of the District of Columbia, the Metropolitan Washington Police Department, the D.C.
