Born: Komplex
Location: Baltimore, MD
Poet • Hip-Hop Artist • Event Host
“Where Langston Hughes meets Mos Def,” he walks like a poet and talks like an MC. Infectious charisma, intelligence and a passion for performing have allowed this extraordinary artist to leave an indelible mark on audiences internationally.
Kom- the poet…the MC…the host; the pen…the mic…the voice.
Intelligent, magnetic and smooth only begin to describe the experience of Komplex on stage. Most often compared to Common, Mos Def or Talib Kweli, Kom is a writer among writers, from the dimension of hip-hop where real lyricists lounge. His humor, warmth and professionalism will embrace you; add to that gripping delivery, wordplay that is nothing less than captivating, a potent presence and you have the package. The pen is to the page as his presence is to the stage; equally potent, equally moving facets of this multi-talented artist.
Over the last five years, Komplex has performed internationally as an invited guest to the annual international poetry concert “When Brothers Speak” in Ontario Canada and has shared stages with some great contemporary artists and TV personalities. He has opened for:
Floetry |
Regina Belle |
Peabo Bryson |
Stephanie Mills |
Roy Ayers |
Ann Nesby |
| Ricky Smiley - host of BET Comic View |
Saul Williams - UPN TV show Girlfriends” |
Dwele |
Kom has also hosted concerts for Jessica Care-Moore, and Hidden Beach recording artists Kindred. He currently hosts the TV show “The Underground” broadcasting on Niavision.com and the music video to his hit song “I Remember You” can also be viewed at niavision.com/koms_video. In Jan of 2003 he organized and hosted “I-95 Live” which is to date the largest poetry slam ever held in Baltimore attracting over 400 spectators with 20 selected poets invited from various states along the I-95 corridor. In 2004 Kom won over $2000 in slams and showcases himself including the $1000 Next Big Thing talent showcase held in November.
His current recording project “Just Kom” has been hailed one of the best albums by a local artist in 2003. It boasts quality production from 4 different producers incorporating Jazz, Hip-Hop and Soul music that speaks in concert with his inviting baritone and signature flows. The album is best-described as feel-good music consistent of strong lyricism and catchy melodic choruses that will have listeners young and old singing along and vibing to it in frequent rotation.
Professional, inspiring and entertaining, Kom has performed in venues ranging from youth prisons, churches and corporate and community-based functions, to events such as the Black Expo in NYC, The Volvo Yacht Fest in Baltimore and the Washington DC Capital Jazz Fest. A polished entertainer, Kom’s talent and experience have set him apart in the community of rising artists. Whether hosting an event, marrying words to poetic cadence or threading a hip-hop beat with signature flows, with his distinctive voice and identifiable style, he has established himself as an icon in Baltimore, bound for national recognition.
